Austin SXSW - Part I - The Drive Down

Five friends and I took a road trip down south to Austin, Texas to experience SXSW firsthand. This is the first in a series of blog posts that will highlight my favorite photographs and events from our journey to the lone star state.

Our trip began on Tuesday, March 16th 2010. We left blustery Chicago at approximately 10:30 P.M. After starting off in the wrong direction we finally found our way onto I-55 S. I took the first position in the driver seat. I kept driving until 4 A.M. We had some crazy conversations in the car in the middle of the night. Have you ever played "How Much Does Someone Have to Pay You to Do...?" Crazy weirdness ensued. I highly recommend it.

Despite my terrifying nightmares of the car sliding off the road and us crashing to our deaths, I managed to get a few hours of fitful sleep. Then the sun was up and we were in Arkansas. We stopped at an IHOP and had a well deserved breakfast. Our waiter had the most peculiar southern hospitality vibe and seemed like all he wanted out of life was to make our lives easier. He even offered to split the bill six ways for us! In Chicago, you'd really have to pull some strings to make something like that fly. (Take note restaurants of Chicago, Arkansas has you beat!)

You can check out some iPhone pictures from that IHOP in my SXSW iPhone Gallery on Facebook. It should be public for all to view.

What follows are the images I snapped on our daylight ride through Arkansas and Texas on our way to Austin. If you become a Fan of my Facebook Page, you will see more unedited pictures from the trip down. These are my favorites.

Brittiney's Beautiful Children (09/05/09)

A day spent running through the corn with Brittiney's kids. Ajna is a delight to photograph since he's really into the camera himself. (He takes some good pictures himself!) Arijah is wonderful too since he's so wide-eyed for the world and wants to explore everything. I hope you like the pictures. Note: These were already published on my Facebook, but I thought they might reach a wider audience here. I also spent a little more time editing them for this post.

U.S. Airways Flight 1549 Crash

In an amazing display of citizen journalism, Janis Krums managed to snap this picture with his iPhone while his ferry was on it's way to help rescue passengers of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 after it had crashed in the Hudson River. I have reposted the image here because his original post on TwitPic was unavailable due to the high demand on their servers.

Twitter has been exploding with eye witness accounts of the crash. Apparently after take-off, the plane flew through a flock of geese, which destroyed both engines (a rather unprecedented accident). The pilot was attempting to turn the plane back to the airport but couldn't maintain altitude. Managing an excellent landing in the icy waters, the pilot was able to avoid a much more devastating accident.

It appears now as if all passengers have been rescued. Luckily nobody was seriously injured.

This photo captures the power of citizen journalism and the power of Twitter. Being able to spread this important event in an instantaneous way that doesn't rely on the location of the networks anchors and reporters works wonders for spreading new quickly. I hope more people buy iPhones and subscribe to Twitter. The world will be a more informed place.

Update: Here is a video clip of Janis Krums being interviewed on TV only 30 minutes after the photo above was taken.

A Picture Per Day - Trump Tower Construction

While driving with Alison to head down to the Apple Store on Michigan Ave., we were lucky enough to see this helicopter positioning the antennae for installation on top of the Trump Tower.

It wasn't a windy day really, so I guess they probably had an easy time of it, but a part of me was feeling queezy. At any second it could all come toppling down! That is what led me to crop the photo this way. Such extreme angles lend a sense of unbalance to the image. Let me know what you think. How could this image be improved?

A Picture Per Day

I'm going to start uploading a picture per day. I hope it's a series that will help draw some more visitors to my site, as well as keep you all coming back for more.

These first two are from France. Taken on my two-week trip with Peter LeGrand's class in the South of France. It was a beautiful time and these are two of my favorite texture details from that trip. Let me know what you think.
